The Saeculum Decoded
A Blog by Neil Howe

A friend sent a link of this video of Drake’s new hit “Money to Blow” recently:

It’s the typical Millennial (born 1982-200?)translation of the original Generation X (born 1961-1981) hip hop: Dial up the money and pleasure—but dial down (to practically zero) to desperation and survivalism, which once upon a time was such a essential theme of Xer hip hop.

IMO, this stuff is just dream fluff.  Genuine Xers, claim you don’t know this guy.

This is exactly why I am embarrassed to be a Millennial. It’s too bad I had to be born into the one archetype with absolutely no originality or depth.

Neil, is it just me, or is the current 'bling and girls' hip hop genre about to get completely demolished in the coming era of economic difficulty, self-sacrifice, institutional death-and-rebirth?

The popularity of Vampire movies has been interesting. Also interesting is the string of post-apocalyptic movies: Legion (1/22/10), 2012 (11/13/09), “The Road” (10/16/09 release), “The Book of Eli” (1/16/10) and “Collapse” (11/6/09), all about end of days.

I am of the belief that hip hop might go back to its roots, speaking of the struggles of day to day life once again. And that people may gravitate more towards Rock music again. For some reason Rock music has resonated a lot more deeply with me the past year, even some of the older stuff like Hendrix. And I'm a Millenial!
